Prior to the arrival of Mara and Mark, preliminary meetings
took place between Christina and senior members of the
Department of Education in the Free State. These were to set the
agenda and to define realistic objectives for for the week and
then to agree on the most suitable itinerary that might allow us
to meet these objectives.
The backdrop to this invitation was a prior visit by a Free
State education department delegation to the United Kingdom
earlier in the year. Partly hosted by MirandaNet and including a
visit to Chafford Hundred Campus (Mark Bennison - Assistant
Headteacher), a secondary school at the cutting edge of
eLearning implementation. This visit was a huge success and did
much to build confidence in the ability of the broad based and
highly experienced consultants that form MirandaNet to work
closely with the Department in developing their framework for
and implementation of eLearning across the Free State.
The first part of the week also included a fact finding tour
of some key sites in the region. Although Mara Chrystie (former
Primary Headteacher) has extensive, first hand experience in
education in Southern Africa, this was the first visit of
Christina and Mark to South Africa and it was deemed important
to get a feel for the region, its peoples, culture and in
particular its schools in order to be able to engage in informed
dialogue and consultancy.
